Art Portfolio of Westcountry Artist Anje Yelf: watercolours
About a decade ago I was introduced to watercolours for the first time. My husband bought me a marvellous paint box and encouraged me to try something different. Perhaps he thought it would be a change from the smell of oil paint.
I have discovered that watercolour painting requires some degree of patience.
The images of watercolour paintings below, include a selection of landscapes and still-life studies.
Studio
Size: Height 11" Width 15"
My Studio in the loft.
Rooftops
Size: Height 11" Width 15"
The view to the south from my studio window, looks over the rooftops of
houses on what used to be known as Treacle Hill.
In the distance is the rolling green farmland at Wolborough.
Newton Abbot
Size: Height 11" Width 15"
East Street Newton Abbot circa 1900 approx. I was reading a book titled
'A book of Newton Abbot' by Roger Jones, when I came across an old black and white
photograph of East Street. I decided to use the image as inspiration for this painting.
Blue bottles
Size: Height 11" Width 15"
This is a compositional still-life study of artist materials and blue bottles.
The most interesting aspect was attempting to capture the way light and surface interacted.
Green Glass
Size: Height 11" Width 15"
A compositional still-life study of glass form.
The work attempts to capture the light refracting in the glass and show the differeing qualities in the thickness of the actual glass itself.
Tree
Size: Height 7" Width 10"
The Tree was freely painted in a short timed study.
Saddle Tor
Size: Height 11" Width 15"
There are many tors on Dartmoor in Devon and Saddle Tor lies to the west of the more famous Haytor Rock.
